Lipedema: post-operative compression
?
An essential part of recovery!
Postoperative compression is an essential part of recovery. In this article, we will discuss postoperative panties.
We will discuss the recommended post-operative panty as post-operative compression forWAL liposuctionof the "upper thighs, thighs, and saddlebags" area, but this panty can also be used for the lower area, i.e., "ankles, calves, and lower knees" (replacingBiflexcompression bands).
Compression helps bruises and swelling go down faster after surgery and lowers the risk of post-op phlebitis.
This post-operative compression also allows the skin to retract properly, thereby optimizing the results of WAL liposuction on areas affected by lipedema.
Dr. Nicolas Zwillinger recommendslipoelastic panties, which you can purchase from this laboratory online on their website or directly from their Paris office (by appointment).
During this appointment, a member of the Lipoelastic team will take your measurements and you will also be able to try on some items. This team of professionals will be able to advise you on styles and sizes. Similarly, if you order online, you can contact them by phone so that they can assist you remotely.
Take measurements correctly
One of the key points of compression is ensuring that it is appropriate. It is important to take your measurements carefully before the procedure. Even though the lipedema fat in the operated area will be removed during the procedure, changing your measurements, post-operative edema will quickly appear. The measurements taken before the procedure are therefore appropriate.
You can order two pairs of panty girdles, one in the size measured before the procedure and the second in the size below, which can be worn two to three weeks after the procedure when the swelling has begun to subside. To help you take your measurements correctly, please refer to the diagram below or watch the explanatory video in this article.
You can record these measurements and repeat them regularly after the procedure to monitor progress.
How to properly put on your post-operative compression garment
Putting on post-operative compression garments can be difficult, so we recommend using the lipo-slide (provided by the laboratory with each order). As you can see in the video, this accessory makes it easier to put on the "ankle" part of the panty. To put the panty on correctly, you must position the label facing outwards and ensure that the seams are at the back of the thighs. You must then gradually pull the panty up, avoiding creases, particularly at the knee joint. You can then fasten the panty using the hooks. You can initially fasten the first row and then tighten it as needed.
During the first few days, you may feel tired and have limited mobility. We recommend that you ask a nurse or a loved one for assistance.
Caring for post-operative clothing
Care is important. Compression garments can be washed by hand in cold water or in the washing machine at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees. They should be left to dry in the open air, away from tumble dryers or heat sources (irons), as this could damage the fibers and reduce their compressive properties, thereby compromising their effectiveness.
The Lipoelastic brand also offerscompression garmentsthat can be worn daily by women affected by lipedema to promote good circulation in the venous and lymphatic systems.
There are also other brands of post-operative compression garments.
We hope that the advice given in this article and video dedicated to post-operative compression will help you learn more about this topic and assist you in the various stages, from taking measurements to maintenance and putting on the panty.
